A Special Message from Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs, Dr. Joseph Watson

A college education is a self-directed journey in which each individual must decide where they wish to arrive and the nature and details of the route they wish to take to their destination. As with any journey, the road is not always smooth; there can be mishaps, detours, and unpleasant segments. However, having clear goals and objectives, sound plans and strategies for achieving them, a willingness to ask for assistance and direction when needed, and supportive companionship will virtually always guarantee that you will reach your destination very satisfied with the experience and the enthusiasm to undertake the challenges to achieve your next set of high aspirations and goals. To help you plan your journey at UCSD and to achieve your highest aspirations, I offer the following suggestions:

During your first year on campus, take the time to carefully consider, decide and write down your aspirations for your life after UCSD.

What will it take, in specific terms and actions, to achieve your aspirations? If you do not know, ask now. Write down what you need to do for frequent reference.

What do you want your college experience to be both within and outside the classroom? Become an actively involved student in the UCSD community through your academic major department, student organizations and other involvement opportunities.

What do you need to do to have your desired outcomes and college experience at UCSD? If you do not know, ask now. Write down what needs to be done and review periodically.

Participate in study groups and develop a group of peers and friends with similar and supportive academic interests.

Get an on-campus job or internship (paid or unpaid) of less than 18 hours per week and volunteer in the community. It will give structure and discipline to your life and provide you with experience working on a team, knowledge of the campus and community, and future references.

Take full advantage of faculty and T.A. office hours and develop meaningful relationships with your instructors.

Devote sufficient time to your studies -- approximately three (3) hours of study per week for every unit of course credit.

Stay physically active, exercise, manage stress, and get enough sleep.

Always act with honesty and integrity inside and outside of the classroom.

Establish a strong network of peers and friends who share similar interests and goals.

Participate in skill development activities, programs, and workshops to enhance your abilities as an effective writer, speaker, and communicator.

View UCSD as your university and actively engage it to achieve your aspirations, goals, and needs.
