Academic Resources Academic Enrichment Programs The Academic Enrichment Programs offers a wide range of research-oriented academic preparation programs for UCSD undergraduates in various fields of study. Theses programs are designed to encourage students to pursue Ph.D.’s, medical degrees, and other advanced degrees in academic research and to provide academic support to students from freshman year to graduate school. In this effort, a special emphasis is made to increase the number of low-income and ethnically underrepresented students in graduate school and in academic and research professional positions. Faculty Mentor Program The Faculty Mentor Program offers research experience to any junior or senior with a GPA of 2.7 or higher who wants to prepare for graduate or professional school. Participants work as research assistants to UCSD faculty members for at least 10 hours per week during the Winter and Spring quarters. Students receive 4 units of 199 independent study credits for each quarter. Contact: Veronica Henson-Phillips (858) 534-5791 vhensonphillips@ucsd.edu Health and medical professionals Preparation Program (Hmp3) The Health Promotions Program assists students in their preparation for careers in the health professions such as in medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health, pharmacy, etc. Activities include a volunteer placement program, faculty or community member mentors, pre-professional seminars, peer discussion groups, and library and resource materials. Activities include informational and skill-building workshops, field trips to local companies or research institutions, research opportunities, research camps, book scholarships and a resource/computer room is provided for students. Contact: Jacqueline Azize-Brewer (858) 534-8839 jazize-brewer@ucsd.edu McNair Program The UCSD McNair Program is a one-year rigorous program of scholarly study activities that includes academic-year research placement, summer internship as a research assistant on a faculty mentor’s project, training on how to write and present a scholarly research paper, tutoring, guidance in applying for graduate school and obtaining fellowships, preparation for the GRE and seminars provided by faculty. Brown (858) 534-2937 tkbrown@ucsd.edu University of California Leadership Excellence Through Advanced Degrees Also known as UC LEADS, this two-year program of research and scholarly activities for undergraduates is designed to prepare students for Ph.D. programs, preferably at the University of California. UC LEADS scholars participate in the UCSD Summer Research Program and continue their research during the following academic year through the Faculty Mentor Program. During the second year, students participate in summer research on another UC campus and continue to be involved in enrichment activities during the academic year at UCSD. More Academic Resources Academic Internship Office The Academic Internship Program is a valuable form of professional training which provide students the opportunity to test their career interests in an off-campus setting. Student benefits include practical experience, career clarification, transcript notation, professional contacts and upper division elective units (pass/no pass). Ethnic Studies Department The UCSD Department of Ethnic Studies emphasizes comparative, analytic, and relational study of ethnicity and race in the United States. Fields of emphasis include intercultural communication and conflict, population histories of America, ethnicity and identity, immigration and assimilation, ethnic politics and social movements, race and racism, urban ethnicity, intellectual and cultural histories of ethnic groups, cultural pluralism, language and ethnic life, and mass media representations of ethnic identity. Howard Hughes Undergraduate Science Enrichment Program The overarching goals of the Howard Hughes Program are to make science more attractive (especially for students from disadvantaged background), to increase the ability to succeed and to be eligible to compete for admission to demanding colleges and post graduate schools. The specific goals of the program are to assure that participating students remain science majors in the university and are successful academically. We achieve this by offering a variety of enrichment activities, through drop-in advising, by providing special research opportunities and by just being a "home-base" for students to chat or study.
